The stage is set for the world’s largest underwater macro photography shootout in the Philippines.

Dubbed the “World Cup of Underwater Photo Competitions,” the Anilao Underwater Shootout is back for its fifth year from November 28 to December 2 in Mabini, Batangas.

Co-organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Philippine Airlines (PAL), the shootout projects some 200 underwater photography enthusiasts participating from all over the world, thus making it one of the biggest in the world.

The 2016 competition drew in 165 eager competitors both locally and internationally from countries like Singapore, China, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Turkey, Portugal, United States of America (USA), Switzerland, Germany, France, Australia, and Canada. With PAL offering an additional 40 kilos fee in baggage capacity for traveling divers, more overseas participants will most likely flock to the waters of Anilao and capture through their lens its colorful and diverse marine life.

This year, the DOT aims to showcase Anilao’s extremely rich biodiversity evident in its world-class critter diving, variety of dives sites suitable for every type of diver and photographer and stunning seascapes which makes it one of the world’s premier underwater photography destination and the perfect setting for the annual shootout.

“The DOT is also leading in the implementation of a strict “No Marine Life Manipulation” policy for underwater photography competitions, employing the assistance of spotters and dive guides to help ensure the protection and conservation of marine life during the competition proper. With the cooperation of the local government units and the resorts owners association, we have been able to successfully implement this so that the country continues to enjoy Anilao as one of the best dive destinations in the world,’’ explains Undersecretary for Tourism Development, Benito Bengzon, Jr.

Comprising the panel of judges at this year’s shootout are some of today’s most celebrated photographers, namely, world-renowned nature photographer and Lennart Nilsson Award winner David Doubilet; aquatic biologist and widely published photojournalist Jennifer Hayes; Palme D’or winner and photographer Scott “Gutsy” Tuason; Singapore-based veteran diver and underwater photographer William Tan; Tobias Friedrich, diver and award-winning photographer from Germany; and Yoshi Hirata, Philippines-based Japanese marine biologist and accomplished underwater photographer.

Two special categories are also available at this year’s competition: Blackwater and Bonfire, which must feature animals found and photographed by doing either blackwater and bonfire dives; and GoPro/iPhone Special Beginners, a new category for participants who use GoPros, smartphones, and the like for underwater photography.

Registration and submission of entries for the competition proper will be held at Acacia Resort and Dive Center, while awarding and closing ceremonies will take place at Camp Netanya.

The Second and Third Day of Arab Fashion Week Showcased Ready Couture From All Around The Globe

DAY 2: November 16, 2017

DAY 3: November 17, 2017

The five-day Arab Fashion Week was officially declared open on 15th November  by the Arab Fashion Council in partnership with Sheikh Mohammed Maktoum Juma AlMaktoum Investment (MBM). The second of the bi-annual event this year takes place between November 15 and 19 ,2017 at City Walk, in partnership with Meraas. With the distinction of being the world’s only ready-couture and pre-collections fashion week, international and local designers will be presenting their collections for Spring/Summer 2018 and Pre-fall/Winter 2019.

Nine designers presented their Ready Couture Spring/Summer 2018 collections on the second and third day of Arab Fashion Week. Asworld’s only bi-annual Ready Couture Fashion Week, the AFW has established itself in the fashion world for showcasing creative and technical brilliance of both local andinternational labels.

Day 2

The evening started with the Indian designer Nitin Kartikeya, presenting his eponymous label Kartikeya. Using contemporary silhouettes and forms as the canvases to showcase the rich and intricate Baroque patterns and embroidery, the collection celebrates the grandeur of the bygone times by presenting them as ultra-contemporary pieces. Kartikeya described his collection as If pop-icon Madonna was to be envisioned by William Shakespeare, then my collection is what she would wear”.

French designer Christophe Guillarmé presented the second collection of the evening. The set is Christophe’s contemporary vision of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Flowing gowns and cocktail dresses, halter and boat necks, shimmer and chiffon effortlessly come together to create glamorous red carpet moments, reminiscent of the great stars of the yesteryears, and their great sense of style. The designer said, “My style is noticeable at first sight. I’m a real keeper of traditional creative approaches and exquisite finishing: my gowns are a mix between Glam Rock and Couture. My ultra-feminine style shows the contemporary way of creating glamorous icons”.

The evening’s final showcase was from Viola Ambree, the Swiss luxury fashion house. Clean and precise linear forms accentuated by handcrafted detailing were the highlights of this chic urban collection. The theme upholds every cosmopolitan fashionista’s requirement to be exquisitely dressed whilst doing everyday things. The predominantly white and pastel collection comprises of gowns, dresses, pant-suits and quilted jackets.  Viola Ambree commented, “This Ready Couture collection was created to make every day and every occasion in a woman’s life memorable”.

Day 3

Featuring six designers, the evening commenced with Phuong My, the Vietnamese designer. Her Spring/Summer 2018 Ready Couture is themed as “Daffodils”. The delicate flower is the essence of her 30 piece collection where soft pastels intermix with cool and warm tones exude the retro style of the 50s. Delicately embroidered or appliquéd, and set with Swarovski crystals, feathers and fine beads, the daffodil detailing are accentuated with pink, purple, green, yellow, black and white hues of the fabrics. A formal collection that epitomizes elegance, the gowns and dresses are a play of soft feminine colours with strong silhouettes. The pure silk collection carries her signature silhouette – the hourglass cocoon shaped bottom-half that showcases the feminine shape at its best. Phuong My commented about the inspiration she acquired from daffodils, “This is the flower of spring and summer and its delicate look and exquisite structure reminds me of the beauty of Asian women”.

The second designer of the evening was David Tlale from South Africa. The Spring Summer 2018 Ready Couture collection showcased retro glamour and stayed true to his signature showmanship. Elaborately structured cocktail dresses and statement piece gowns in vivid colours offset with elements of black created stunning visuals. David said, “My inspiration is always pop culture and glamour, into which I introduce the warmth and colour of Africa which is globally popular in fashion.

Tamam Humariff from Russia followed, with her exquisite collection of formal evening wear and bridal wear that is the epitome of elegance and femininity at its finest. Intricate detailing and shimmering fabrics are used to create the beautiful cocktail dresses and full-skirted gowns. Magnificent in their structure and detailing, the full-length hoop skirted bridal wear with cinched waists and fitted upper-halves showed off the designer’s brilliance of technique and design. Tamam described the collection as an acknowledgement to the host city, “Dubai’s love for beautiful and gorgeous things was my inspiration. My collection celebrates the grandeur and magnificence that the city symbolises”.

The fourth designer of the evening was the pop-icon Mua Mua Dolls from Italy, renowned for its range of Mua Mua Dolls that became an instant rage with fashionistas across the world. The Spring/Summer 2018 collection continues the label’s celebration of pop-culture, taking every day names and turning them into ultra-chic urban fashion. Knitted tops and scarves teamed with full length silk skirts, fitted and sequined long dresses and kimonos emblazoned with graphics, and accessorised with the signature Mua Mua dolls, bags and sunglasses, brings out the fun and informality of fashion. Ludoviga Virga, the designer behind the label said, “Fashion is best done with lots of fun”.

Minaz from Malaysia presented the evening’s modest fashion collection. The sophisticated and elegant Spring/Summer 2018 Ready Couture showcased Minaz’s understanding and mastery over colour, form and detailing. From pant-suits to gowns, the entire collection was created with pastels and chiffon, with a hint of vibrant colours that gently contrasted with the overall subtlety. Minaz said, “My inspiration is summer and the practicality that is required for the season. Elegance is the key for every woman that wears modest fashion and every piece is not only practical but also elegantly brings out the feminine side”.

The evening ended with the second designer from Italy, Renato Balestra. Classic Italian style that was immortalized through Italian films and theatre of the 50s and 60s was the inspiration for this Spring/Summer Ready Couture collection. Full-on glamour and chic reigned supreme, with fitted cocktail dresses with capes, structured jacket and full-skirt ensembles and red carpet gowns with side-panels in black, gold and jewel tones. Each piece a stunning creation, the entire collection had all the elements of being show-stoppers.

Saher Dia’s Golden Era Takes Over Arab Fashion Week

The five-day Arab Fashion Week was officially declared open yesterday evening by the Arab Fashion Council in partnership with Sheikh Mohammed Maktoum Juma AlMaktoum Investment (MBM).

“Simplicity is elegance” said Saher Dia following his show at Arab Fashion Week on November 15th where he showcased an exclusive collection for the first time as a pret a couture for this season.

With an impressive clientele inclusive of various Royalty and VIPS across the GCC and Levant, Fashion designer Saher Dia’s latest collection debuts at Arab Fashion Week leaving a truly memorable golden shine over all present.

Lebanese Saher is no stranger to opulence and grandeur, having been born and brought up in the UAE, and since establishing his atelier in 1997 he had mastered the art of how the right dress or fabric can perfect a woman at any function or event, from evening out to wedding.

Saher’s Golden Era collection included evening gowns and one royal wedding gown. The collection was completed by combining a powerful yet moving mix of pastels, boi de rose to pinks, blue gray to blues and a soft mix of off-whites and beiges moving towards golden on different fabrics with accents of silver and gradual color shifts. Bringing together a beautiful blend of fabrics, from stretchy satin and crepe and dantelle, chiffon, tulle, organza, taffeta and some detailed embroidery. From romantic aesthetics to breathtaking silhouettes, the collection takes you to a time where a woman’s femininity was evident in the sway of her skirt.

“We have to find a way to have the dress glow” Said style icon Marlene Dietrich long ago, and today Saher’s collection has drawn inspiration from golden style icons Marlene Dietrich followed by the exotic Rita Hayworth who has captured his heart, providing him the inspiration to create more gowns after further fashion research into the past, and then finally followed by timeless Greta Garbo, three historical fashion icons who left a serious fashion imprint within the same era. The three powerhouses of style gave birth to Saher’s Golden Era collection, bringing together a timeless collection of dresses loved from the 1920’s to the late 1940’s.
